Despite being a prized coaching prospect, his tenure in Dallas was viewed as a disappointment, since he failed to guide the team to a playoff berth.
His coaching style is described as being bland and complicating in the beginning.
He goes by the nickname 'Gully.'
Why he might not be annoying
He was a star player in the Western Hockey League during the early 1990's.
He served as the head coach and general manager of the ECHL's Las Vegas Wranglers for six seasons, before accepting the job coaching the Stars farm affiliate.
Some hockey pundits felt he wasn't to blame for his failures in Dallas, as he was put in a difficult situation due to the team's ownership and financial challenges.
He guided the Flames to the team's longest winning streak since moving to Calgary (2017).
He is considered a players coach.
