Founded the art gallery '291' (1905)

He avoided working for a living through allowances from his father and father-in-law.
He cheated on his first wife with O'Keefe.
He was 22 years older than O'Keefe.
He was forced to resign as editor of American Amateur Photographer magazine because his brusque style alienated too many subscribers.
He was a hypochondriac.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was known as the father of modern photography for his campaigns to have photography recognized as an art form as legitimate as painting.
He made the first successful photos in rain, in snow and at night.
His 291 gallery introduced Americans to leading European artists, including Picasso, Matisse, Rousseau, Cezanne and Rodin.
He said, 'Photography is my passion. The search for truth my obsession.'
