Racist

The Resume

    (1943-April 22, 2010)
Born in Washington Heights, Manhattan, New York
    Lawyer, white nationalist
Helped organize and chaired the National Youth Alliance (1969), later becoming the neo-Nazi National Alliance
Self-proclaimed leader in the nationalist Skinhead movement (false)
Wrote the 1982 memoir 'The Commission'
Founder of the Nationalist Movement (1987)
Stabbed to death in his Learned, Mississippi home at age 67

Why he might be annoying:

He tried to pass himself off as Southern born, but didn't move to Mississippi until 1966.
Caught in his lie, he stated he moved from New York to escape the influx of Jewish, Negro and Puerto Rican immigrants.
He was under F.B.I. surveillance from 1967-69 due to his racial rhetoric.
He returned his bachelor’s degree from Rutgers to protest a professor’s sympathetic remarks about the Viet Cong during the Vietnam War.
He purported the usual racist shit, like claiming 'the Negro race possesses no creativity of its own, and pulls the vitality away from civilization.'
He ran unsuccessfully for the 2nd Congressional District seat in 1974 and 1984, and Mississippi Supreme Court in 1986.
Some members of his white supremacist group nicknamed him 'Whacky Dick.'
Holding a failed anti-gay demonstration in Boston (14 followers vs. 800 cops needed to protect them), he said, 'You can call Richard Barrett the civil rights leader of the country.' (pathetic)
He had a perverse fascination for convicted racist murderers, such as KKK killer Edgar Ray Killen and Byron de la Beckwith, murderer of Medgar Evers.
He tried several times to have the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday repealed (big surprise).
Claiming there would be a revolution if Barack Obama was elected president, he stated, 'The revolution, if you will, in 1776 brought the 13 colonies together against the king. And the same thing can happen now against Martin Luther King, with the 50 states.'
Mark Potok, who monitors hate groups for the Alabama-based Southern Poverty Law Center, stated, 'Richard Barrett was a guy who ran around the country essentially pulling off publicity stunts. He really never amounted to any kind of leader in the white supremacist movement.'

Why he might not be annoying:

Serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, he received two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Commendation Medal for his galantry.
He graduated from Memphis State University Law School in 1974.
Medgar Evers brother Charles, whom he talked with many times (though not as friends), stated he didn't think Barrett believed the things he said, quoting 'He made a living talking all that racist talk. I think it was just a way he had to live. I hate to see Richard go like that, and I hope that a black person didn't do it. That's just reverse hate.'
