Why he might be annoying:

His face was described as 'buttocky.'
Some felt his comedy was merely random and odd, rather than truly funny.
He couldn't seem to do an interview without breaking into some silly character.
Despite being highly respected, he didn't have a decent tv or movie part for many years prior to his death.
The grumpy old windbag Steve Allen thought he was a genius.

He is a pioneer of improvisational comedy.
He suffered from bipolar disorder, and was institutionalized for it in the 1960's.
His father was an abusive alcoholic.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
He was married to the same woman for more than 50 years.
He was a fine painter.
He sometimes showed up at antique fairs and did free comedy shows.
