Baseball Player

The Resume

    (May 14, 1881-May 26, 1959)
    Born in Plains Township, Pennsylvania
Pitcher for the Chicago White Sox (1904-16) and Boston Braves (1917)
Managed the Chicago White Sox (1924)
    1.82 ERA
    1,736 strikeouts
    195-126 win-loss record
Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee (1946)

Why he might be annoying:

He enrolled in Fordham University, but left after two days because he could not get along with his roommates.
As a spitballer when it was still legal, he would openly lick the ball -- at least until one game when the opposing team smeared horse manure on the ball. ('I vomited all over the place.')
His signature pickoff move -- raising his shoulder slightly as if beginning his windup before swinging around and throwing the ball to first -- would almost certainly be called a balk under modern standards.
He got a job as an AL umpire, but quit after a few weeks, saying it was 'all jeers and no cheers.' (1922)

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the last pitcher to win 40 games in a season (1908).
He led the AL twice in strikeouts (1908,1911) and twice in ERA (1907,1910).
His career ERA of 1.82 is the lowest in Major League history.
He rescued two girls from drowning in Lake Michigan (July, 1916).
