Why he might be annoying:

During the Apollo 7 mission, he was asked to perform a test on some equipment. Rather than follow the command, he quipped that he wished to speak to 'the Man or whoever it was that thought up that little gem.'
He and his co-crew on Apollo 7 were removed from flight rosters following behavior deemed insubordinate by flight directors during their mission.
He is divorced.
He was a freemason.
He chose a dangerous career despite having a wife and children.

Why he might not be annoying:

He held a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy and a Master of Science degree in Astronautics from the Air Force Institute of Technology.
Upon leaving the Air Force, he became director of the U.S. Peace Corps in Thailand.
He suffered a fatal heart attack.
