Religious Figure

The Resume

    (March 2, 1876-October 9, 1958)
Birth name was Eugenio Maria Giuseppe Giovanni Pacelli
261st Pope of the Catholic Church (1939-1958)
Only pope of the 20th century to use his Extraordinary Magisterium (papal infallibility)

Why he might be annoying:

As a cardinal, he signed a treaty with the Nazis agreeing to free practice of Catholicism in exchange for separation of religion from politics.
This demolished the Catholic political parties in Germany and gave Hitler a huge diplomatic victory.
He did not openly speak out against the Holocaust.
He refused a demand by FDR to denounce Nazi persecution of Jews in Europe.
Some claim he did not know the full extent of Nazi persecution of Jews even though numerous documents indicate he did.
He only started working against the Nazis when it was clear that the Allies were going to win the war.
He ordered that Jewish babies who were baptized Catholic not be returned to their Jewish parents.
He either ignored or condemned any attempt to change Catholic positions to fit the modern world.
His body was embalmed so badly that those guarding it had to rotate every 15 minutes or they would collapse because of its stench.

Why he might not be annoying:

He organized humanitarian relief during World War I.
He attempted to work out a peace plan with Kaiser Wilhelm II but it was rejected (1917).
He tried to remain neutral during World War II.
He claimed to denounce atrocities in general by both the communists and the Nazis.
He felt action spoke louder than words, and some claim he saved the lives of many Jews by hiding them in the Vatican.
Hitler said, 'Pius is the only human being who has always contradicted me and who has never obeyed me.'
    He spoke eleven languages.
He was the first pope to address the world through radio and television.
His doctor was a fraud that treated his illnesses with medication that gave him chronic hiccups and rotting teeth.
    He supported the United Nations.
He was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II.
