Why he might be annoying:

He was the first evangelist with a nationally broadcast program (1952), paving the way for the likes of Jimmy Swaggart and Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.
His Cathedral of Tomorrow was specifically built to accommodate TV cameras and crews.
A series of sermons in the 50s with faith healer Kathryn Kuhlman drew criticism.
Six states banned his ministry from selling securities because they were not properly registered (1973).

Why he might not be annoying:

Unlike many of the televangelists who followed him, he was never in a sex scandal.
He was married to his wife Maude for 65 years until his death.
He preached in person to 1.2 million people during a tour of Brazil (1979).
He officiated at the funeral of Elvis Presley.
US News and World Report named him one of the 'Top 25 Architects of the American Century.'
