He was a decade older than the rest of the band, which contributed to his not fitting in.
His wife Lily objected to his staying out late at night to play.
He was asked to leave after a failed audition with Fontana Records when the producer said he did not like Sandom’s drumming.

He was especially hurt by Pete Townshend asking him to leave, since a few months earlier, he had defended Townshend when a record company executive called the guitarist ‘gangly, noisy, and ugly’ after another failed audition.
Townshend later said he regretted how ‘clumsily’ he had handled Sandom’s dismissal.
He held no grudges, telling an interviewer, ‘The main thing I want everybody to know is I still think the Who is the best fucking rock and roll band in the world.’ (2012)
