Why he might be annoying:

When Disney animators went on strike, he moved back East to avoid taking sides (1941).
‘Pogo' was the first comic strip moved to the editorial pages by editors who felt that ‘politics has no place on the comics page.'
The FBI suspected he was sending coded messages in the nonsensical poems and songs he peppered the strip with and went so far as to have their cryptanalysts try to decipher them.

Why he might not be annoying:

‘Pogo' appealed to children and adults.
He satirized Senator Joseph McCarthy as the character ‘Simple J. Malarky.'
He coined the phrase, ‘We have met the enemy and he is us.'
He was the first comic strip artist asked to contribute his original artwork to the Library of Congress.
