Why he might be annoying:

At twenty-four, he moved to San Francisco to be part of the gold rush.
He attempted selling canvas to prospectors for tents, but was not successful.
When he made pants out of canvas, they were durable but they caused chafing.

Why he might not be annoying:

At eighteen he moved to New York City.
When he was made aware that the canvas was too rough for pants, he used a french twilled cotton cloth called serge de Nimes (denim).
He and Jacob Davis patented the use of copper rivets to strengthen his denim work pants (May 20, 1873).
He used pocket stitching on the back of his jeans to make them brand recognizable. This lead to most jean companies following suit a century later.
He found time to become a director of an insurance company and several banks.
He founded a number of charitable organizations.
