Celebrity's Relative
    (July 15, 1893-January 1, 1977)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Birth name was Gertrude Amelia Krieger
    Mother of Shirley Temple
    Married George Francis Temple (1910)
Portrayed by Connie Brittonin 'Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story' (2001)
    She was a stage parent.
She unsuccessfully lobbied for Shirley to be cast in The Wizard of Oz and Mildred Pierce.
She was known for clashing with Darryl Zanuck over the direction of her daughter's movie career.
She ignored Shirley when she complained about mistreatment on the set of the 'Baby Burlesk' serials.
She hand-sewed Shirley's 'Burlesk' outfits, many of which would be deemed inappropriate by today's standards.
She insisted that screenwriters for 'The Blue Bird' make Shirley's character mean and unsympathetic as a departure from her wholesome image.
The 'Blue Bird' movie bombed critically and commercially, and ironically would mark the end of Shirley's dominance in Hollywood.
Her father died when she was 15, and she grew up in poverty.
Shirley Temple's autobiography, 'Child Star,' is dedicated to her.
She recognized her daughter's dancing abilities at an early age and convinced her husband to enroll her in dance classes.
She was a shrewd businesswoman who managed her daughter's career.
She was critical of the studios for not allowing Shirley to 'grow up' naturally on film (preferring to keep her 'a child' well after she hit puberty).
She made the wise decision to put Shirley's movie career on hold so that she could 'retire to the life of a normal child.'
Many have credited Shirley's avoiding the 'child star curse' to her having a supportive and loving mom who didn't exploit her but kept her level-headed.
