His wife, actress Patricia Lake, claimed to be the daughter of Hearst and Marion Davies.
He was at one point considered a suspect in the Black Dahlia murder.

He excelled at playing the comical ‘mama’s boy.’
He is buried in the same family mausoleum as Marion Davies and her husband.
