    Non-fiction works include 'Jesus Rediscovered' (1969), 'Chronicles of Wasted Time: An Autobiography' (1972), 'Jesus: The Man Who Lives' (1976), 'The End of Christendom' (1980) and 'Conversion: The Spiritual Journey of a Twentieth Century Pilgrim' (1988)

Why he might be annoying:

    He considered his work for military intelligence in Mozambique during WWII so 'absurd and degrading' that he attempted suicide by drowning.
    He went from scorning the 'ordinariness' of religion to being a zealous convert.
    He called the Beatles 'dummy figures with tousled heads and no talent.'
    He resigned as rector of Edinburgh University to protest the student council's attitude towards 'pot and [birth control] pills.'
    He attacked Monty Python's Life of Brian as blasphemous.

Why he might not be annoying:

    While investigating P.G. Wodehouse on charges of collaborating with Germany, the two became friends, which he later called 'the only worthwhile thing I did in the war.'
    He was known for his caustic wit.
    He said about being out of step with prevailing opinion, 'Don't forget that only dead fish swim with the stream.'
    Michael Palin said of his attack on Life of Brian, 'He was just being Muggeridge, preferring to have a very strong contrary opinion as opposed to none at all.'
    He posthumously received the Ukranian Order of Freedom (2008) for his reporting on the Stalinist famine in the Ukraine 75 years earlier.
