Why he might be annoying:

    He is a self-described geek.
His lyrics for the song 'Mandelbrot Set' actually describe the procedure for generating a Julia Set. (Geeks are supposed to get that kind of thing right, dang it!)
He has expressed worries that moving from his geekier numbers to more traditional pop fare might alienate his audience.
    His fans nicknamed him JoCo.
He said, 'I find it hard to write about myself or to write from a personal point of view. So the way I get around that is by writing from the perspective of a giant squid.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His lyrics have been described as 'if Bob Dylan and the internet had a baby.'
He provided music for John Hodgman's book tours.
He quit a programming job to perform music full-time shortly after his daughter's birth, feeling that if he did not take a stab at achieving his dream, he would be telling his daughter that dreams are not worth pursuing.
He carved out a career on the internet without any record company contract at all.
He allows free use of his songs in non-commercial works, resulting in scores of fan-created videos for his songs.
