Why American Idol 12 - 2013 might be annoying
Some critics complained that the show placed too much emphasis on the feud between new judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj.
A clip from the Charlotte audition that was initially on TMZ shown months before the season began airing allegedly showed Minaj saying to Carey 'I would shoot that bitch.'
Many music critics were shocked by Angie Miller's sudden elimination considering she had been a fan favorite and had not landed in the bottom three until her elimination.
There were conspiracy theories that the voting was rigged so that the male contestants would not advance in the later rounds.
There were also rumors that former judge Jennifer Lopez would replace Carey.
This edition produced the lowest ratings since the show's inception.
In fact, sitcoms such as 'The Big Bang Theory' and 'Modern Family' would earn higher ratings than 'Idol.'
It also marked the first time that the grand finale scored fewer than 20 million viewers and was not the most watched program of that evening.

Singers Smokey Robinson and Harry Connick, Jr. served as mentors to the contestants in some weeks.
Despite television and music critics bashing the judges, many of them praised the contestants as one of the best set of finalists in years.
This season featured 'Where Are They Now?' segments updating the status of former 'Idol' winners and contestants.
Former judge Paula Abdul made a brief cameo during the Top 5 results show.
Jennifer Lopez also performed on the season finale of the contest.
Glover became the first female winner of 'Idol' since season six champ Jordin Sparks in 2007.
In addition, Glover and runner up Harrison became the first female duo finalists since season three in 2004.
