The Resume

    (July 14, 1927-July 12, 1996)
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
    Hosted The Today Show (1961-62)
Anchor of the NBC Nightly News (1970-82)
Narrated the Ken Burns documentary 'Baseball' (1994)

Why he might be annoying:

He never got used to the early hours of 'Today,' once nodding off while on the air.
While covering the 1964 Republican convention, he was arrested for blocking the aisles.
He spent his entire stint as anchor at #2 behind Walter Cronkite at CBS.
When he resigned as anchor, he said, 'I don't want to measure out my life in 30-second introductions to other people who do the reporting.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He said he went into journalism because 'I wanted to have an interesting life.'
After his arrest at the convention, he memorably signed off, 'This is John Chancellor, somewhere in custody.'
He interviewed every US President from Truman to Clinton and every British Prime Minister from Clement Attlee to John Major.
He was honored by the Overseas Press Club (1993) for his 'dedication to presenting the news without the theatrical embellishments used to turn the news into entertainment.'
