Why he might be annoying:

As a kid, he tortured and killed stray cats and dogs.
Before reaching his teens, he had twice tried to kill other children, violently beating one until his father pulled him away, and trying to drown one in a pool until the lifeguard intervened.
He sent letters about his crimes to newspapers and police departments, signing them with a smiley face.
After he became a suspect in the murder of his girlfriend, he tried twice to kill himself by overdosing on sleeping pills.
While in custody, he claimed to have committed 160 murders, then recanted his confessions.
He claimed to have met the Green River Killer when they both chose the same spot to dispose of victims, then learned that the women they were burying were identical twin sisters. (In reality, none of the Green River victims had an identical twin.)
He said, 'I enjoy screwing with the press and prosecutors through the press.'

Why he might not be annoying:

His father would beat him with a belt in front of other people and once gave him an electric shock.
Because he was large for his age, he was mocked by his classmates and his own brothers.
He claimed he was raped when he was 14.
His confession to killing Taunja Bennett, including telling police where he had disposed of her purse, resulted in the release of two people who had been convicted of her murder.
