The Resume

    (1967- )
    Located in Indianapolis, Indiana
Played in the American Basketball Association (1967-76)
    Won three ABA championships (1970, 1972, 1973)
    No NBA championships
Three retired numbers: George McGinnis' #30, Mel Daniels' #34, and Roger Brown's #35
Other former and current Pacers include Reggie Miller, Chuck Person, Rik Smits, Jermaine O'Neal, and Ron Artest

Why they might be annoying:

    Reggie Miller.
They are sometimes referred to by media folk as the Indianapolis Pacers even though they have never been known as that.
After they joined the NBA, they held a local telethon in order to keep the team from being moved and sold.
They almost moved to Sacramento in the early 1980s.
They only had one winning season in their first 13 years in the NBA.
They thought it was a good idea for Isiah Thomas to be their coach.
When they did fire Isiah, it was under iffy circumstances. They re-signed Jermaine O'Neal to a huge contract after they promised him that Isiah would stay (2003).
It took them seven first rounds to win their first NBA playoff series and five conference finals to make their first NBA Finals (which happened in 2000).

Why they might not be annoying:

They were perhaps the most dominant team in the American Basketball Association, winning three ABA titles.
They were the only team to give a woman an NBA tryout (Ann Meyers, 1979).
They had a great rivalry with the New York Knicks in the 1990s.
They have arguably one of the nicest NBA arenas, Conseco Fieldhouse.
It is the post-Celtics home of Larry Bird, who has served as both a coach and a president.
It took just three years for them to be title contenders after the team was rebuilt following their NBA Finals run.
