    Democratic Congressman representing Florida (1949-1993)

Why he might be annoying:

    In the 1950s, he signed the Southern Manifesto in support of segregation.
    He voted against many civil rights bills.
    He went from being a conservative to a liberal.
    It was Bennett who sponsored a bill that added 'In God We Trust' to United States currency.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He served in World War II and as a result of contracting polio, he was disabled for the rest of his life.
    He was Florida's longest serving Congressman.
    He was committed to enforcement of ethical conduct in the House.
    Despite his anti-civil rights stance, he voted for the Voting Rights Act of 1965, calling it a 'constitutional obligation.'
    He later would come to entirely support civil rights.
    His son, Charles Jr., died of a drug overdose at 22. He then acted by sponsoring anti-drug legislation (1977).
    In addition to being a congressman, he was also a historian who wrote several books about Florida's history.
    He co-sponsored the Americans with Disabilities Act.
    He retired to care for his wife who had suffered a stroke.
