The Resume

    (March 5, 2013-circa January 15, 2015)
    Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
    Opened in Spring 2013
Canadian extension of (American) Target Corporation
Slogans: 'Expect More, Pay Less' and 'Target Loves Canada'
Announced closures on all its 133 stores on January 15, 2015
    Lasted 22 months

Why Target Canada might be annoying:

Target based its decision to open in Canada partly on Canadians living close to the border going to their American stores for shopping.
It failed to provide Canadian consumers the lower prices the American stores offered.
It also failed to provide comparable merchandise.
Shoppers would visit stores to see the shelves thinly stocked.
Its closure of 133 stores resulted in 17,600 workers being laid off.
    It housed Starbucks.
After it took over Zellers, employees of the latter had to reapply; many, even those with years of service, were not rehired.
Its now-former CEO, Gregg Steinhafel, received a $61 million severance package while the store workers received only up to 16 weeks worth of pay.
It closed down with $5 billion in debt.
Their creditors include Chapman's Ice Cream, Coca-Cola and even food banks!
While many retailers would hire extra help during the winter holiday season, it cut down many of their exsisting employees' hours before Christmas 2014.

Why Target Canada might not be annoying:

It took over Canadian retailer Zellers.
It could not match the success of competitor Wal-Mart Canada.
Tariffs, Canadian food packaging laws, employee wages and lack of ties with wholesalers contributed to why the corporation could not match what its American stores provided.
Its failure and the lessons learned will make a great international business and marketing case study for years to come.
It carried the same logo (that is just begging to be pissed on) as the American stores.
Its announced closure had Canadians tweeting Target jokes on how it missed the mark.
