Mascot

The Resume

    Born in Marlow, United Kingdom
Official mascot of the 1966 World Cup
An anthromorphic lion who wears a Union Jack shirt and is frequently seen playing soccer
Designed by British commercial artist Reg Hoye

Why he might be annoying:

He wears a Union Jack shirt but he's supposed to represent England, not Britain.
He would have a big start in the sports mascot phenomenon which included heavy merchandising.
He even had his own theme song, performed by Lonnie Donegan.

Why he might not be annoying:

He is a lion, which is the symbolic animal of England.
Reg Hoye based Willie off of his young son Leo.
He was one lion character that didn't appear threatening.
He still makes the occasional public appearance and remains one of the most beloved World Cup mascots ever.
He was mascot when England not only hosted the World Cup but won it.
Just like Donegan's song, 'He's tough as a lion and never will give up!'
