Why he might be annoying:

    He spent most of career on a Rangers team that was good, but not good enough to contend for the Stanley Cup.
    He walked off the 1972 Summit Series team after two games.
    His decision to leave the team led the Canadian media to call him a deserter.
    Despite being considered a Ranger great, he was traded away to Pittsburgh where he would finish his career.
    He never won an individual award or posted eye-dropping numbers.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He initially began his NHL career as an enforcer, before moving to a scoring role.
    He, along with Rod Gilbert and Jean Ratelle formed the 'GAG Line' during the 1970's.
    He captained the Rangers to an appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals (1972).
    He was the first Rangers player to score 50 goals in a season.
    He publicly called out Alan Eagleson, after the latter refused to come to his defense following his decision to leave Team Canada during the Summit Series.
    His decision to leave caused no animosity amongst his Summit Series teammates, as he was still welcomed to alumni related functions.
    He was the second Ranger, after Mark Messier have his number 11 retired by the team.
