Why he might be annoying:

Before the season in which he won the Cy Young Award, he was considering retiring from baseball and going to college fulltime.
He frequently clashed with coaches and managers (with a few exceptions, such as Gene Mauch and Walter Alston), and developed a reputation of being ‘too smart for his own good.’
    He sported huge sideburns.
As a pitching coach, he advocated an unconventional motion, in which the body rotates rather than bending, that even his students said made them look ‘like a girl throwing.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award.
The season he won the Cy Young Award, he set two Major League records: most games pitched in during a season (106) and most consecutive games with a relief appearance (13).
He was active in the players’ union, which also did not endear him to management.
He earned a PhD in physiology from Michigan State University.
He claimed his pitching method would eliminate many common arm injuries; however, most pitchers decided they would prefer needing Tommy John surgery over looking goofy.
