Why he might be annoying:

Before WW I, he was a heavy drinker and brawler.
He wouldn't let a movie be made about his life unless Gary Cooper portrayed him in the film, and he did in 1941's 'Sergeant York.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an expert sharpshooter.
He killed 28 German soldiers with exactly 28 shots, the German Major who had called for the attack on York and his squad, offered to surrender his entire command if York would 'just stop shooting.'
It is believed that York alone took 139 German soldiers as prisoners during the war.
He married his girlfriend one week after returning from Europe.
He used his notoriety to get a High School built in his home town.
