He was used as a backup catcher in the early stages of his major league career.
He was a member of the Cardinals team that lost the World Series to the Minnesota Twins during his first major league season (1987).
He grounded into 15 double plays (1992).
Despite posting good numbers in defensive categories as a catcher, he only made one All-Star appearance.
He was a below average hitter.

During the 1992 season, he recorded a .999 fielding percentage, tying an NL fielding percentage record for catchers.
He excelled in throwing out baserunners who attempt to steal bases.
