He's often confused with former Disneyland character Eagle Sam and the Muppet Show's Sam the Eagle.
His excessive merchandising would set the standard for Olympic mascot commercialization in the future.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was modeled after America's national bird, the Bald Eagle, and named after Uncle Sam.
He was the Cold War's response to Misha the Bear.
He ranks as one of the best Olympic mascots ever.
He still makes appearances at track meets hosted by the LA84 foundation.
Any American would sooner have him as an Olympic mascot than Izzy any day.
