The Resume

    (October 31, 1947- )
    Born in Munich, Germany
Son of a US Army physician
    Long distance runner
Won the 10,000 meters and marathon at the Pan American Games (1971)
Won gold (1972) and silver (1976) medals in the marathon at the Olympics
Inducted into the Olympics Hall of Fame (1984) and National Track and Field Hall of Fame (1989)

Why he might be annoying:

Like Mark Spitz, he sported a porn star 'stache at the '72 Olympics.
At the end of the 1972 Olympic marathon, he entered the stadium and was greeted with boos. (The audience was actually reacting to a hoaxer who had just been hustled off the track by security guards.)
He complained 'Guys who make a cult of running ruin the whole thing' while running over 150 miles a week in training.
He was ultimately overshadowed by his training partner, non-medal winner Steve Prefontaine.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the first American to win an Olympic gold medal in the marathon since 1908.
His victory was credited with kickstarting the jogging craze of the 70s.
He established his own line of lightweight running gear (1977).
He was the first chairman and one of the founders of the US Anti-Doping Agency (2000-03).
