Why he might be annoying:

There was some controversy about his real name, as he claimed to have been born Donald Barry de Acosta.
Although it was his breakthrough role, he complained that he was miscast as Red Ryder, since the character was tall and lanky, while he was short and stocky.
    He disliked the nickname 'Red.'
He was billed as Don 'Red' Barry in Westerns and Donald Barry in other films.
In the late 60s, he begged fans to contribute a dollar apiece to launch a new series of Westerns.
After an argument with his estranged wife, he committed suicide by shooting himself.

Why he might not be annoying:

A reviewer said of his performance as Red Ryder, 'What he lacked in stature, he gave back in gusto.'
He was nicknamed 'the James Cagney of Republic Studios' due to the actors' similar heights and pugnacious screen appearances.
He made the list of top 10 cowboy stars four consecutive years (1942-45).
Burt Reynolds and director Don Siegel were fans and cast him in supporting parts in their pictures in the 70s.
