Why he might be annoying:

    He was the barker for a marionette act at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.
    He was nicknamed 'King Jack.'
    His attitude while interviewing contestants on 'Queen for a Day' ranged from unctuous to inappropriately jocular.
    He sometimes insulted the female assistants on the air, such as telling the audience, 'Let's give a big hand to Mary Ann for finally doing something right.'

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was the uncredited voice of Goofy in 'Goofy and Wilbur,' the first Disney short to feature Goofy solo instead of as support for Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck (1939).
    For two years he did double duty, hosting 'Queen' in the day and Truth or Consequences at night (1954-56).
    He has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, for radio and TV.
    He was open about his membership in A.A. at a time when alcoholism was rarely discussed in public.
