Judge

The Resume

    (September 23, 1941- )
Born in Durban, Natal Province, South Africa
Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws at Natal University South Africa
Master of Law and Doctorate of Juridical Science at Harvard University
Co-founder of Equality Now (international women’s rights group, 1985)
    International Criminal Court judge (2003–2008)
High Commissioner of the United Nations Council (2008– )

Why she might be annoying:

On being the first non-white woman with her own law practice in Natal Province (1967): ‘No law firm would employ me because they said they could not have white employees taking instructions from a colored person.’
As a Tamil, her suggestion to probe Sri Lanka for war crimes (2009) led to insinuations that she favored Tamil separatists.
Her close connection to Richard Goldstone – the justice for whom the UN Fact-Finding Mission on the Gaza Conflict was named – fueled suspicions of cronyism among conservative media circles.

Why she might not be annoying:

The law section of the Harvard website nicknamed her ‘The Bus Driver’s Daughter.’
She was deeply taken with the story of the Nuremberg trials.
She was a defender of anti-apartheid activists.
As the only female judge during her first term on the Rwanda tribunal, she was the key player in the conviction a small-town mayor for genocide.
She gives journalists and world leaders – and even provincial and state leaders – huge fits (considering many of them have no problems horning in on other nations’ business but wish theirs not to be).
