The Resume
(July 27, 1834-November 27, 1895)
Born in Paris, France
Son of Alexandre Dumas, pere
Best known for the novel and play 'La dame aux camelias' ('The Lady of the Camellias')
Why he might be annoying
He switched from novels to writing for the stage solely because he needed money.
Although he was prolific, 'The Lady of the Camellias' is the only one of his plays that remained popular.
'The Lady of the Camellias' was rejected by the French censors three times before it was finally staged.
He emphasized the importance of marriage in his works but had a mistress for eight years.
Not surprisingly, he suggested that a man's adultery could sometimes be forgiven, a woman's never.
His name looks like it should be pronounced 'dumb-ass.'
Why he might not be annoying
In his day, he was taken more seriously by the critics than his father was.
He was admitted to the French Academy and received the Legion of Honor.
After his first wife's death, he married his mistress.
'The Lady of the Camellias' inspired the Verdi opera 'La Traviata' and several film adaptations, most notably one starring Greta Garbo.
