Died from injuries sustained while being trampled by 3 players from the University of Minnesota

In a letter found after his death, he stated he felt the responsibility of his entire ethnicity on his shoulders.

He was the child of an ex-slave and Buffalo Soldier.
He was Iowa State's first black football player.
On October 6, 1923, during a game, he suffered a broken collarbone, internal bleeding and hemmorhaged lungs.
It's speculated his death was racially motivated.
In 1997, Iowa State named their football stadium in his honor.
