The Resume

    (September 8, 1906-September 12, 2005)
Born in Kronberg im Taunus, Germany
Won a silver medal in the 4x400 relay (1928) and bronze in the 5000 meters (1930) at the World University Games
Final torchbearer in the first Olympic torch relay (1936)

Why he might be annoying:

The Olympic torch relay was not an ancient Greek tradition, but was created by Nazi propagandists for the Berlin Olympics.
He did not make the Olympic team.
He was chosen to light the Olympic cauldron not for his athletic prowess, but because an aesthetics committee and filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl decided he had the best-looking running style.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was an electrical engineer with 35 patents to his credit.
At the 1930 World University Games, he competed in a stadium that used a telecommunications system he had devised.
At age 90, he participated as a torchbearer for the centennial Olympics (1996).
