Why he might be annoying:

He refused to wear a helmet during his playing career.
He was charged with vehicular homicide when he killed a woman while driving home intoxicated (1984).
He spent a year in jail as a result.
He became a journeyman player in the last few seasons of his career.
During a game, he angrily ripped the tongue of the Calgary Flames mascot, Harvey the Hound.
He drew the ire of hockey pundits when he elected to play the neutral zone trap during the Oilers playoff run.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a solid two way player during his playing career.
He made the best of the second chance he was given by the Oilers following his release from jail.
He earned four Stanley Cups during the course of his career.
At the time of his retirement, he was the last active player not to wear a helmet.
In his rookie season as a head coach, he guided the Oilers to an unexpected playoff berth.
He coached the Oilers to a surprise Stanley Cup Finals run (2006).
