Group consists of Matt Johnson (born August 15, 1961) and whoever he decides to work with on any given project

Why they might be annoying:

The band's name is either pure lunacy or pure genius, depending on your interpretation.
Johnson admits he's a loner and hates the rock scene, stating, 'I don't like the rock industry or even the term 'rock.' One of the reasons I haven't toured is that it's a treadmill: record, tour, record. It's just a business to make money.'
Not counting Johnson, the band has had no less than 17 'official' members and countless collaborators/contributors.
The The was set to release their debut album, 'The Pornography of Despair,' in 1982, but Johnson was dissatisfied with it and scrapped the whole thing.
1995's 'Hanky Panky' album consisted of nothing but Hank Williams covers.
Between 1978-2002, both as solo and as The The projects, Johnson has recorded a staggering seven albums that have not been released.

Why they might not be annoying:

The band's name is either pure genius or pure lunacy, depending on your interpretation.
Johnson grew up in a flat above his father's pub Two Puddings, known as a hang-out for both celebrities and criminals.
His uncle owned several nightclubs in London and introduced him some of the acts he booked, including Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and The Kinks.
He worked so hard on producing his debut album 'Soul Mining' that he became ill and couldn't work for an entire year after its release.
One time band members have included former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and former ABC drummer David Palmer.
Collaborators have included Sinead O'Connor, Neneh Cherry and Anne Dudley from Art of Noise.
In 1989 Johnson was set to make his first U.S. tour with the band when his brother died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage.
After taking two months off to mourn the loss, and knowing his brother would have wanted him to continue, Johnson toured the States in 1990.
The The completed the album 'Gun Sluts' in 1997, but Sony refused to release it without explaining why.
