    Recorded the albums ‘The X Factor’ (1996), ‘Fantastic Negrito’ (2014), ‘The Last Days of Oakland’ (2016) and ‘Please Don’t Be Dead’ (2018)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was a drug dealer.
    He learned to play by infiltrating the music classes at the University of California at Berkeley – after growing out his sideburns to fit in with the students.
    He ran an illegal nightclub with décor he described as ‘like a pimps from outer space thing.’
    He dyed his hair blue to front a punk-funk band called Blood Sugar X.
    He recorded his first, nondescript album under the mononym Xavier, with one of his songs landing on the soundtrack of the high camp flop ‘Showgirls.’

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was inspired to learn music after hearing that Prince was a self-taught musician.
    He stopped selling drugs after he was robbed at knifepoint by gang members: ‘The next day I got out. I hitchhiked to LA with $100 and a keyboard.’
    He ended up in a coma for three weeks after his car was struck by a drunk driver (1999).
    He beat out 7,000 other entrants to win NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest (2015).
    He described his style as 'black roots music for everyone.'
