    His first novel, ‘A Bomb Built in Hell,’ was considered so dark and nihilistic that he could not get it published for nearly four decades.
    He broke his wrist punching a wall in a courtroom demonstration.
    He said, ‘My idea of exercise is lighting cigarettes with wooden matches instead of a Zippo.’
    When he was seven, an older boy hit him in the face with a chain, damaging the eye muscles, which required him to wear an eyepatch for the rest of his life.
    He suffered malaria and malnutrition while trying to find a land route to bring food and medical supplies to Biafra during the Nigerian civil war.
    He served as a law guardian, representing the interests of the children in abuse and neglect cases.
    He trained therapy dogs for abused children.
    During an interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show, he proposed creating a national registry of child abusers, which became a reality with the National Child Protection Act (1993).
