She claimed to be descended from Inca royalty.
She said that as a child, she was worshipped by mountain villagers, who called her 'the bird who became a woman.'
Some believe Yma Sumac was just a character created by a Brooklyn housewife named Amy Camus (which is 'Yma Sumac' reversed).

She had a five-octave vocal range.
She was hugely popular in the 1950's, performing at the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall.
Her career dried up in the 1960's, and she retired to a quiet life.
In the 1990's, she was rediscovered by young music fans seeking new sounds.
