    Best known for ‘The Alexandria Quartet,’ consisting of novels ‘Justine’ (1957), ‘Balthazar’ (1958), ‘Mount Olive’ (1958) and ‘Clea’ (1960)
    Also known for travel books and poetry
    Nominated for Booker Prize for ‘Constance, or Solitary Practices’ (1982)

Why he might be annoying:

    He flunked his university entrance exams.
    He said during a TV interview that he had been bored with life since birth.
    He married four times.
    Many readers never get past the first few pages of the turgid, slow moving ‘Alexandria Quartet.’
    He boasted of being a fascist.
    He hated Britain yet held various posts for the British government.
    He was sexually insatiable.

    Henry Miller called him a ‘stinking genius.’
    His daughter hanged herself at age 34.
    His brother Gerald Durrell was a popular nature writer.
    He worked as a nightclub pianist in the 1920s.
    He and Miller founded their own press when they couldn’t find publishers for their sexually explicit prose.
    His experimental writing in The Alexandria Quartet’ revolutionized modern fiction.
