The Resume

    (September 2, 1884-June 11, 1970)
    Born in Benton, Pennsylvania
Former Christian missionary to the Philippines
Called 'The Apostle to the Illiterates'
Developed a method for creating a written language and method of teaching it to pagan tribes
When he returned to the United States, he adapted this method to teaching literacy to illiterate adults
    Founded Laubach Literacy in 1955
Wrote forty books, mostly on prayer and social justice issues including 'The Game with Minutes' and 'Jose Rizal: Man and Martyr'

Why he might be annoying:

Little research has been done on how the Laubach method compares to other methods of teaching adults.
The Laubach method is little used outside of Laubach centers and affiliates.
The Laubach motto was 'Each One Teach One.' Laubach hoped that each person who learned to read would teach others in turn. This has not been the case as almost all Laubach tutors are educated professionals.
In a world where someone like Yassir Arafat can win the Nobel Peace Prize, he has received virtually no recognition for his work.

Why he might not be annoying:

Over sixty million illiterate adults have been taught to read and write using his methodology.
In 1984, he became the first American missionary to be featured on a United States postage stamp.
He visited 103 countries trying to promote adult literacy.
His method has been incredibly effective teaching mentally retarded adults.
In person, he was the embodiment of the Christian gentleman.
He dedicated his life to helping others.
