Penal colonies were built at Marquarie Harbour (1821), Maria Island (1825) and Port Arthur (1832).
A severe brush fire destroyed $11 million worth of property and killed 60 (February 1, 1967).
Madman Martin Bryant shot & killed 35 in Port Arthur (April 28, 1996).
The penal colony on Tasmania was for convicts who did not learn their lessons on penal colonies on the mainland.

Why Tasmania might not be annoying:

Tasmania was thought to be part of the mainland until Mathew Flinders circumnavigated it (1798).
This discovery cut six days on trips between India and Sydney.
Tasmania is the only island state of Australia.
Charles Darwin, aboard the HMS Beagle made a trip to study evolution in Tasmania (February 1836).
Among their many waterfalls is Russell Falls.
Actor Errol Flynn was born in Hobart.
John Tarrant, the 1st Australian born Zen teacher was born in Tasmania (August 14, 1949).
