Filmmaker
    (February 10, 1941-January 7, 2021)
Born in Aylesbury, England, United Kingdom
Directed most of the 'Up' documentaries, tracking 14 British children into adulthood every seven years: '7 Plus Seven' (1970), '21 Up' (1977), '28 Up' (1984), '35 Up' (1991), '42 Up' (1998), '49 Up' (2005) and '56 Up' (2012)
Directed the feature films 'Stardust' (1974), 'Agatha' (1979), 'Coal Miner's Daughter' (1980), 'Gorky Park' (1983), 'Gorillas in the Mist' (1988), 'Thunderheart' (1992), 'Nell' (1994), 'The World Is Not Enough' (1999), 'Amazing Grace' (2006) and 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' (2012)
President of the Directors Guild of America (2003-09)
He said about getting the 'Up' subjects to continue participating, 'In the early days I would use bullying and emotional blackmail.'
He said about the early 'Up' installments, 'I tried to play God. I tried to predict what might happen to people and sort of set it up for that.... That was an embarassing mistake.'
He was married and divorced twice.
He said, 'I was ambitious, and I paid a price for it. I wasn't as good a father or husband as I should have been.'
The 'Up' series topped Channel 4's list 'The 50 Greatest Documentaries.'
He has had success with both documentaries and feature films.
He said, 'I have furious rows with documentarians at movie festivals. They'll insist that there's something pure about documentary and impure about movies, but that's absolute bollocks.'
His feature films are known for having strong female protagonists (which he has suggested was a subconscious way of making up for the small number of girls chosen for 'Up').
His conclusion from the 'Up' films: 'If there's one thing I do know, it's that everybody has a story.'
