Why he might be annoying:

'Hello Walls' was the only one of his songs to crossover to the Pop Top 40.
His demeanor would switch suddenly from Southern gentleman to obnoxious drunk.
He racked up arrests for reckless driving, DWI, indecent exposure and shooting out the lights in a Nashville bar.
He was arrested for assault after a concert where he spanked a six-year-old girl in the audience (1972).
His wife divorced him on the grounds of physical abuse.
In his will, he cut off a son who testified against him during the divorce proceedings with $1.

Why he might not be annoying:

He lost his girlfriend to Hank Williams, who reportedly pulled a gun on him to emphasize his interest in her.
He sold over 30 million records.
He noted in 1988, 'I've been around so long that when I tell people I'm 56 years old, they laugh and say, 'And how many more?' The best thing is to say you're 75 and then they say you look good for your age.'
He was one of the founders of the trade journal Music City News (1966).
He was generous, giving out hundred dollar bills to friends and band members in need and often refusing repayment.
Minnie Pearl said of him, 'This man right here can take a show away from anybody he wants to, when he wants to. I've seen him do it.'
