Why he might be annoying:

His catch phrase was the way he would count down a song 'a one and a two.'
He paid his performers the bare minimum (union scale wages).
His brand of music (big band, dixieland, standards, etc.) was corny and hokey.
Jazz numbers & popular songs on the show were generic, watered down versions.
He appealed to the older demographics, primarily senior citizens.
It was rumored that he fired his original champagne lady, Alice Lon, for showing 'too much knee' on 'The Lawrence Welk Show.'
He played the accordion.

Why he might not be annoying:

Women would line up to dance the polka with him.
Despite his success, he remained humble and loyal to his roots.
He always listened and catered to his audience.
His show remains popular in reruns (on PBS) after nearly fifty years on television.
He assembled a fine group of professional musicians and vocalists of his era.
He referred to his regulars as his musical family.
He always was concerned and looking out for his musical family's best interests (personally and professionally).
His live concert tours were standing-room only, sold out crowds
