    (November 16, 1943-May 17, 1974)
    Born in Cleveland, Ohio
    Middle name was David
Also known as Cinque Mtume and Field Marshal Cinque (taken from Joseph Cinqué, the leader of the slave rebellion which took over the Spanish slave ship Amistad in 1839)
Co-founder and leader of the California terrorist group Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA)
Died in a shootout with the L.A. police (along with five other SLA members) in a ghetto bungalow at age 30
At age 14, he dropped out of high school and became a street gang member in Buffalo before serving time at age 16 for grand larceny.
Once freed, he spent more time running from the law in Ohio, New Jersey and California.
He escaped Vacaville Prison (March 5, 1973) and hooked up with some white, left-wing radicals in the San Francisco area, committing bank robberies.
Calling themselves the Symbionese Liberation Army, his group escalated their terrorism by murdering Oakland Schools Superintendent Marcus Foster (Nov. 6, 1973) and kidnapping Patty Hearst (Feb. 4, 1974).
His far-left tactics were condemned not just by police, but by such '70s activists as Angela Davis, Huey P. Newton and Jerry Rubin.
He died for a worthless cause, and by 1975, his Army was history.
Growing up his father beat him regularly and once broke both his arms.
The house he was in during the shootout caught fire, and trapped in a crawlspace burning alive, he put a bullet in his brain.
He was so badly burned that his family at first did not believe the remains belonged to him.
Stephen King based his recurrent character Randall Flagg in part on him, writing, 'Donald DeFreeze is a dark man. I did not mean that DeFreeze was black; it had suddenly occurred to me that, in the photos taken during the bank robbery in which Patty Hearst participated, you could barely see DeFreeze's face.'
