    Born in Hartford, Connecticut
    Journalist and landscape architect
    Founder of the magazine 'The Nation' (1895)
    Best known for designing Central Park in New York City
    Also designed Prospect Park in New York City; the landscape around the Capitol Building in Washington, DC; the Niagara Reservation in Niagara Falls, New York; Belle Island Park in Detroit; Washington Park in Chicago; and park systems in Boston, Milwaukee, Buffalo and Louisville

Why he might be annoying:

    He had an unsuccessful career as a farmer before moving on to journalism.
    He married his brother's widow (1859).
    After going senile, he became a patient at a hospital whose grounds he had designed.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During the Civil War, he served as director of the US Sanitary Commission, a precursor of the American Red Cross, which was responsible for treating the wounded.
    He insisted on making Central Park open to all social classes, calling it 'a democratic development of highest significance.'
    He founded the first full-time landscape architecture firm (1893).
    Architect Daniel Burnham said, 'An artist, he paints with lakes and wooded slopes; with lawns and banks and forest covered hills.'
