Doctor

The Resume

    (November 26, 1933-August 6, 2016)
    Born in Ilanga, Honduras
    Alfredo Darrington Bowman
    Pathologist, biochemist
    Holistic doctor, self-proclaimed 'healer'
Claimed to have cured his patients of HIV-AIDS, Cancer, Herpes, Diabetes, Sickle Cell Anemia, blindness, impotency, and Lupus
Faced civil/criminal charges for practicing medicine without a license, in 1988; Litigation went to the New York City Supreme Court, where he was found not guilty (Oct. 1, 1988)
Treated celebrities Michael Jackson, Eddie Murphy, John Travolta, Steven Seagal, and TLC's Lisa Lopes
Work led to the establishment of the USHA Research Institute, Dr. Sebi LLC, and the USHA Healing Village (USHA) located in La Ceiba, Honduras
Namesake for Dr. Sebi's Cell Foods
Was arrested at the Juan Manuel Gálvez de Roatan Airport, on charges of allegedly attempting to launder $37,000 out of the country (28 May, 2016); later died in police custody

Why he might be annoying:

    He was married four times.
He identified as a doctor despite holding no degree in medicine.
He claimed to have breast-fed from his mother until the age of four.
He admitted to knocking up a nineteen year old girl while he was married.
He was institutionalized after being diagnosed with Schizophrenia, in 1961.
He said ‘I did not want to be a healer. I wanted to chill, smoke cocaine, and snort it.’
He came to national attention after Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes died in a car accident - which was caught on tape - after leaving one of his facilities.
He argued that AIDS patients actually suffered with a form of lymphatic mucus in their skin/blood.
He would later expand on this argument, although simplifying it to one basic phrase: ‘there is only one disease: mucus.’
He charged patients who came to his village a base fee of $500 and $80 for each additional visit.
He liked to make wildly offensive pronouncements like ‘there is no black leader in America who is interested in the health of the black race.’
His various eccentricities provide ammo to those determined to portray him as a snake-oil ‘quack doctor’ salesman.

Why he might not be annoying:

He claimed to have learned primarily from his herbalist grandmother, who practically raised him in the Honduran jungles.
At the age of 30, he was overweight, visually impaired, and an asthmatic suffering from diabetes.
He somehow survived the ordeal of a forty-day food fast, and afterwards claimed that the experience had restored him to vitality.
In addition, he claimed that ‘natural vegetation cell food compounds’ had revitalized his cells, cleansing his body of the ailments he had previously suffered from.
He was ordered by the New York to remove an ad he had placed in several New York papers reading ‘AIDS has been cured.’ He refused and was arrested.
When the judge ordered him to bring in one patient who could testify to having been cured by him of a disease mentioned in the ad, he reportedly provided 70 patients. Needless to say, he won the case.
Many believe that he was ‘set up’ because he posed a threat to the pharmaceutical companies’ profitable business arrangement.
He was held for over a month with no court date and without bail by the Honduran government, with efforts by his family to get him released failing.
A personal friend of his who visited him in the jail attested to the jail's squalid conditions, which would be enough to kill any person - let alone an 83-year old man.
