Why he might be annoying:

He got a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music, but dropped out.
He wrote and arranged songs for the TV show The Partridge Family.
He wrote songs for Barbra Streisand's smarmy album/movie 'A Star is Born' (and denied sleeping with her).
He wore custom made 'gold-lapel pimp suits' in the '70s.
'Escape (The Pina Colada Song)' is about promiscuity and cheating on one's mate.
The lyric was originally 'If you like Humphrey Bogart,' but he changed it because he felt it fit the song better.
He hates the taste of pina coladas.
He has gotten chunky with age.

Why he might not be annoying:

He's known his wife (married in 1969) since he was 5 (and she was 4).
Songs he's written have been recorded by The Platters, The Drifters, Gene Pitney, Dolly Parton and Barry Manilow.
'Escape' has the distinction of being the last U.S. Billboard Singles song of the 1970's to reach #1.
He won 3 Tony Awards in 1986 for 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood' - the only person to win for book, music & lyrics with the same play.
Shortly after the win, his 10-year-old daughter died of a brain tumor (misdiagnosed as anorexia).
He wrote 'You Got It All,' which was a #3 hit in 1986 for the family singing group The Jets.
