Why he might be annoying:

He only sang one lead on his solo albums.
He has a gruff and unpolished singing voice.
Former Genesis member Ray Wilson mocked his singing voice on one of his live albums.
His Genesis bandmate, Tony Banks, blamed Rutherford for deciding to disband Genesis in 1998.
Despite naming Mike + the Mechanics after himself, he rarely appears as a frontman for the group.
He lacked Steve Hackett's creative guitar playing ability.
He was expelled from school.
He has ill feelings towards the United States because Americans stopped buying Genesis and Mechanics albums.

Why he might not be annoying:

He did not receive much credit for his work with Genesis.
He played a twelve-string guitar.
He is best friends with Genesis frontman Phil Collins.
It was his idea to reform Genesis after Collins' departure.
He originally chose to not record another Mechanics album out of respect for singer Paul Young, who had passed away.
He said about Genesis' commercial approach, 'Despite the media's perception of us, we didn't think of ourselves as a singles band. In our minds we were a band that did long songs but just happened to have a few hits.'
